The homely and romantic 'EKES KONVENTS' hotel with its eleven elegantly designed rooms is named after a former B¸rgermeister of RÓga, Nikolaus Eke. This is the house where he installed a boarding house at the end of the 16th century for widows of the city's craftsmen who saw out their retirement here for more than 300 years. The building has been completely restored under the supervision of the foremost expert on Latvia's architectural heritage, architect PÁteris Blms. The interior is informed by the late 18th and early 19th centuries, because this was the last time that any significant reconstruction of the building took place. 'EKES KONVENTS' retains its impressive vaults, ancient facade and the authentic roughness of its walls. In order not to disturb guest, the toilets built into the rooms are concealed within 'closets'. Guests resident at the hotel are watched over by an angel depicted on Nikolaus Eke's epitaph which art historians consider to be the most notable monument to the Mannerism Era in Latvia. |
